Manuscripts in the Collections

This list of manuscripts in the History of Science Collections, arranged chronologically by date of original composition, includes only manuscript books, not handwritten letters or archives. They are written on vellum, paper and rice-paper, in Arabic, English, French, Japanese, Latin, Persian, and Portuguese. To consult a manuscript, make an appointment in advance with the Librarian or Curator.

  1. Abul-Hasan Kūshyār ibn Labbān ibn Bashahri Gilani (971 – 1029), Lugmil al-‘usul fi ahkam an-nugum [Principles of astronomy and astrology]. Kushyar ibn Labban, also known as Kūshyār Gīlānī, was a Persian astronomer who is best known for his mathematical work, Principles of Hindu reckoning. This is an Arabic manuscript on paper of the 15th century, with text on both sides, written with black and red ink. 15 lines per page. Small quarto. With astronomical tables and 1 diagram. Vellum. This copy is relatively early and very well preserved: for comparison the copy in Berlin is dated 1569 and the copy in the British Museum comes from the year 1648. Uncataloged.
